This is Clayton Rayes and this is a snapshot of a moment in time.
Yesterday around 5 pm he and his wife drove into our gate. He’s a landowner and receiving royalties from one of the older wells here. He was born and raised in Yorktown. He likes to stop by once in awhile just to make sure the pumps are pumping. Wouldn’t you?
Clayton is 84. Looks great….doesn’t he. Anyway, he’s a real nice guy and a pleasure to chat with. Clayton joined the marines in 1946. He was 17 and the war was over. He was sent to a naval base in San Diego, Ca.
There he was living in a barracks with marines who had just returned from the battles in the Pacific………….including Iwo Jima. Just imagine what that was like for a 17 year old farm boy from Yorktown, Tx.
Here’s the kicker. One of those guys was Ira Hayes, the Ira Hayes. Ira Hayes of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. Ira was one of the six and one of only three who survived Iwo Jima.
What a pleasure it was for us to meet this wonderful man. Sometimes God deals me a fine hand.
