Welfare or Madness

“Secrecy is a vacuum and nothing fills a vacuum like paranoid speculation.” from World War Z by Max Brooks.

Recall my enemies. Heat – Dust – Dirt – Frayed Nerves.

Seems a few of my buddies are concerned. They think I may be on the verge of some drastic measure to free me from this funk. Like a nervous breakdown or, worst case scenario, suicide.

Now I had no idea I was giving off those kinds of vibes. In fact, I’m thinking this funk is a very normal reaction to this environment.

Hmmmmmmm.

So this one buddy thinks we should get out of Gate Guarding all together. Just quit. Go live where old people on public assistance go for their final days.

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

But I have obligations. I owe on this RV for one thing. We can’t afford this RV on SS.

Listen moron he says to me, you are 70 years old, have health issues, and you are living on borrowed time.

Get out of Gate Guarding. Declare Bankruptcy. Park the RV in a Walmart parking lot and let them have it. Take your SS and rock away whatever time you have left.

Now, I have to admit, as our brains bake and our lungs choke on dust and fumes,  part of me likes that idea. However, something in my soul tells me it would be wrong and I’m just not ready to take that step.

Your thoughts! What would you do?

  1. I appreciate your ethic, I really do. But, at some point you have to think about yourself and if you ever get to the point you hate getting up in the morning…..it is time for SOME kind of change! But, don’t change the 45-year-old Saint Gaby. 🙂 Hang in there, my friend……remember it could always be worse, you could be in North Zulch. Also, remember it is nice to have people who care….everyone I know is always trying to sell me guns…..

Not sure I understand your point. I don’t dislike ALL people. Just certain types. The key is to associate only with the good guys. Or at least as much as that is possible.

Life is short…do whatever you need to in order to enjoy it. There are so many jobs available to RVers…they may not pay as well but when you figure the hours worked it probably evens out. Amazon.com pays well but the work is hard…we did it as workampers for 4 years but only for about 4 months at a time. Just remember, “You miss 100% of the shots you never take”…Wayne Gretsky.

Sound advice Vicki. We are beginning to consider other options but I sense that once we get into October we’ll be okay. Appreciate your thoughts.

  4. We’ve done the gate guarding stint…lasted two months. If you enjoy it and can handle the heat, bugs, dust, mud, whatever; more power to you. There’s good money to be made out there in the oil fields gate guarding because almost everything’s provided and you don’t have many places to spend what you do earn!

I did not feel any suicide vibe coming off your blog. Thought you were just blowing off steam.

I was just blowing off steam. Don’t like to do that on the blog but what the heck. Can’t be a court jester all the time.

Only you and your wife will really know when it’s time to hang up the keys. Until then keep doing what keeps you sane. We were able to afford building a new home based on our SS income and being eligible for a VA loan. It can be done if that’s what you want. Funny…I didn’t pick up a suicide vibe or anything other than you were pretty miffed about things breaking down…all at once. I think that’s called Murphy’s Law:) That’s my diagnosis and it’s free.,..lol!

Suicide has never been an option for me. Trust me on that. But this weather can push one to consider extremes. Just not that one. Appreciate your thoughts.
